White Sox DFA All-Star Catcher Despite Solid Start To Season

The Chicago White Sox have designated veteran catcher and former All-Star Omar Narvaez for assignment, clearing the way for top prospect Edgar Quero to join the big league roster.

Narvaez, 33, had recently returned to the White Sox—the team where he made his MLB debut—on a minor league deal and was added to the roster earlier this month following an injury to Korey Lee.

Despite a limited opportunity, Narvaez held his own at the plate, going 2-for-7 with a pair of singles and two walks in just four games.

Narvaez had once been considered one of the more offensively capable catchers in the league, posting a .266/.351/.403 slash from 2017 through 2021.

Though his production tailed off in recent years with Milwaukee and the New York Mets, he remained a respected presence behind the plate, particularly for his improved framing and veteran experience. However, with top prospects Edgar Quero and Kyle Teel both pushing for major league time, Narvaez’s stint in Chicago was always on shaky ground.

The move to promote Quero, who is off to a hot start in Triple-A Charlotte, indicates the White Sox’s focus on youth as they continue to reshape their roster.

Quero has slashed .333/.444/.412 through his first 63 plate appearances this season and brings a promising bat-first profile to the catcher position.

Narvaez now hits the waiver wire, and while his recent struggles may limit his trade value, his hot start this season could attract teams like the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, or Miami Marlins—who are dealing with catching injuries—could still view him as valuable depth.
