Top 3 Potential Landing Spots for Free Agent David Robertson

A number of high-profile relievers were on the free agent market this past offseason, but now, over two weeks into the 2025 season, one still remains. David Robertson, after a dominant season with the Texas Rangers, does not have an agent, and represents himself. But he apparently hasn't found an offer yet that he's happy with.

Other top bullpen arms that were available and signed lucrative deals worth at least $10M per season include Tanner Scott, Jeff Hoffman, Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen.

Last year, Robertson signed with Texas for a guaranteed $11.5M. He then went on to record a 3.00 ERA while striking out 12.4 batters per nine innings and allowing just a .202 batting average against in a set-up role. He declined a $7M option after the season.

He just turned 40 on Wednesday, but there's still a chance he could celebrate by agreeing to terms with a team. The top three teams that could be in line to sign him include:

New York Yankees

Robertson was an All-Star in Pinstripes in the early stages of his career, and in 2014, saved 39 games for them. They already had one reunion with the veteran reliever back in 2017, and it seems like a natural fit for them to bring him back for a third term. The Yanks' bullpen sits in the bottom half of the majors, with a 3.97 ERA.

New closer Devin Williams is already on thin ice with the team, with a 12.00 ERA and only one save. He coughed up three runs in just 2/3 of an inning Wednesday night.

Robertson would be a tremendous stabilizing force in the bullpen. In his nine total seasons in the Bronx, he has a 2.75 ERA.

Chicago Cubs

The Cubbies have Porter Hodge and Ryan Pressly for late-game situations, but overall their bullpen hasn't been overly impressive to this point. The Cubs are currently 25th in baseball in bullpen ERA, at 4.97. Robertson has a career 2.91 ERA, with 177 saves. He's also familiar with the Wrigley Field environs, having pitched 40 innings for the Cubs in 2022, recording 14 saves with a 2.23 ERA.

Washington Nationals

The Nationals bullpen is about as woeful as it gets, ranking 29th in the majors with a 5.91 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP. Kyle Finnegan is there to close things out, but the rest of the crew is sorely lacking. If the Nats hope to improve upon their 71-win total of last season, the bullpen is a spot they'll need to shore up.
