Texas Rangers Sign 2x Gold Glover

The Texas Rangers have re-signed veteran infielder Nick Ahmed to a minor league contract, just weeks after releasing him at the end of spring training.

Ahmed, 35, had originally joined the club on a minor league deal in February and impressed with a strong .324/.361/.647 showing during camp, though it wasn’t enough to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster.

After spending the past few weeks working out in Arizona, he’ll now rejoin the organization and is expected to report to one of their minor league affiliates, likely Triple-A Round Rock after some reps in extended spring training.

Ahmed brings over a decade of major league experience and a well-established defensive reputation. Over his career, he’s compiled 79 Defensive Runs Saved and 118 Outs Above Average at shortstop.

From 2016 to 2019, he was one of the most effective defenders in the game, and while his offense has declined in recent years—batting .221/.271/.327 from 2021 to 2024—his glove still carries value.

Last season alone, he made stops with the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Diego Padres before signing with Texas over the winter.

With Corey Seager’s injury history and Marcus Semien nearing 35, the Rangers have prioritized infield depth behind their starters.

Ahmed joins a group of non-roster options that includes Sam Haggerty and Alan Trejo, giving Texas a reliable fallback if injuries arise.
