Seattle Mariners Place Veteran Pitcher On Waivers

The Seattle Mariners designated right-hander Casey Lawrence for assignment on Monday to clear a roster spot for reliever Troy Taylor, who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list.

Lawrence, 37, had been called up from Triple-A Tacoma last week and pitched the final three innings of Seattle’s April 9 win over the Houston Astros, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. He did not record a strikeout but was credited with the win.

It marked Lawrence’s third stint with the Mariners, having previously appeared with the team in 2017 and 2018.

Lawrence has long been a familiar name in the Mariners organization, spending the entire 2024 season with Triple-A Tacoma and signing three minor league deals with Seattle since 2017.

Across parts of several MLB seasons, he’s compiled a 6.73 ERA in 127 big league innings, with a 16.6% strikeout rate and an 8.5% walk rate. A former standout at Albright College, Lawrence holds the school’s all-time strikeout record (251) and posted an 18-8 record with a 2.81 ERA during his collegiate career.

Given his history with the club and residence in the Seattle-Tacoma area, a return on a new minor league deal remains possible if he clears waivers and elects free agency.

In a corresponding move, the Mariners activated 23-year-old Troy Taylor, who had impressed in his 2024 debut with a 3.72 ERA and 30.9% strikeout rate over 19.1 innings. Taylor had missed the early part of the season with a minor lat strain but returned from a rehab assignment despite a rough outing or two.

The Mariners opted to add him directly back to the bullpen rather than optioning him to Tacoma. Meanwhile, veteran righty Jesse Hahn, recently outrighted to Triple-A, declined the assignment and has entered free agency.
