Rangers Release Veteran Pitcher With 2.23 ERA Last Season

He's more than proven himself over the last several seasons in the big leagues, registering a 2.73 ERA across the previous four years, and a 2.23 ERA in 2024, but a bad 4.2 innings to start the year at Triple-A has surprisingly cost reliever JT Chargois his job with the Texas Rangers organization.

It seemed like an excellent low-risk bullpen depth move back in February when the Rangers signed Chargois to a minor league deal, coming off another fine season, split between the Miami Marlins and Seattle Mariners. He posted a 2.23 ERA with a 1.02 WHIP in 36.1 innings.

He then came into camp with Texas and tossed 4.2 innings allowing just three hits and two unearned runs with no walks. Nevertheless, he didn't make the cut out of spring training, and went down to Round Rock in the PCL where he was absolutely pounded for 11 hits and 14 runs (10 earned) in 4.2 innings, for a 19.29 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP. He did strike out seven batters, but also walked three.

Seems like an odd move to cut him loose so quickly, though, after he had established himself for several years as a reliable arm out of the bullpen in the middle innings.

Over his seven-year major league career, the 34-year-old has posted a fine 3.35 ERA across 231 1/3 innings, with a 1.18 WHIP. He should be able to latch on with another team looking for a little bullpen depth.
