Philadelphia Phillies Acquire Veteran Pitcher
The 27-year-old was designated for assignment by Miami after they selected Xzavion Curry’s contract over the weekend. With an open spot on the 40-man roster following the DFA of infielder Buddy Kennedy, the Phillies were able to make the move without needing a corresponding transaction.

De Geus has bounced around the league since debuting with the Texas Rangers in 2021 as a Rule 5 selection. Originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 33rd round in 2017, he’s since pitched in the majors for five teams—including the Arizona Diamondbacks, Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays, and Miami Marlins—often shuttling between organizations via waiver claims.
Across 60 career MLB appearances, de Geus owns a 7.48 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 61.1 innings. He struggled again this spring, posting a 20.25 ERA in 2.2 innings with Miami.
Still, teams continue to be intrigued by his arm strength and pitch mix, which includes a four-seam fastball that touches 98 mph, a 96-mph sinker, a splitter, cutter, and knuckle curve.

While his strikeout and walk numbers have been below average, de Geus consistently generates ground balls, logging a 52.5% grounder rate in the majors and 56.6% in Triple-A last season.
His Triple-A numbers (5.31 ERA, 15.6% strikeout rate) aren’t eye-popping, but his velocity and pitch profile offer potential for development.
With minor league options remaining, the Phillies can afford to give de Geus time to refine his command in Lehigh Valley. If he finds consistency, he could emerge as a bullpen option later in the season.
