Padres DFA One Of Their Former Most Reliable Relievers

The Padres designated left-hander Tom Cosgrove for assignment on Sunday, ending a rollercoaster tenure that saw him go from one of their most reliable relievers in 2023 to a struggling depth piece in 2025.

Cosgrove dazzled as a rookie with a 1.75 ERA over 51.1 innings, but his command and effectiveness waned. After posting an 11.66 ERA in limited big league action last year and getting roughed up early in Triple-A this season, the 28-year-old became the odd man out on a crowded 40-man roster.

“It’s never easy parting with a guy who’s contributed, but we needed a fresh arm,” said one team official.

His roster spot now belongs to right-hander Logan Gillaspie, who was selected from Triple-A El Paso ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Chicago Cubs. The bullpen had been heavily taxed over the weekend—Omar Cruz threw 68 pitches in relief Saturday and was optioned shortly after—prompting San Diego to act quickly.

Gillaspie, who rejoined the organization on a minor league deal after being non-tendered last fall, has tossed 2.2 innings of 6.75 ERA ball in Triple-A and will give the club a short-term boost. However, with no minor league options remaining, his stay on the roster could be brief.

Cosgrove, a 12th-round pick by the Padres in 2017, now heads to waivers for the first time in his career. If he clears, he’ll likely remain in the organization unless claimed by another team in need of left-handed relief.

Given his past success, a club could take a chance. But for now, a promising 2023 season feels further in the rearview mirror than anyone expected.
