Orioles Claim Pitcher Off Waivers With Career 2.18 ERA

The Baltimore Orioles made a quietly savvy move, claiming right-handed reliever Scott Blewett off waivers from the Minnesota Twins.

In a corresponding roster adjustment, the team designated injured left-hander Luis González for assignment. Blewett, 29, will be added directly to the major league roster since he’s out of minor league options, giving the Orioles an intriguing bullpen piece without sacrificing depth elsewhere.

Blewett had only just joined the Twins earlier this month, but his short stint in Minnesota was promising—he allowed one earned run and struck out five over 4.2 innings in two appearances.

He also showed strong form last year, posting a 1.77 ERA in 12 major league outings. Over the past two seasons across various levels, Blewett has maintained a steady presence, including a 1.80 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 25 innings since the start of 2024.

His journey has taken him through the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, and Atlanta Braves systems, plus a stint in China, but recent numbers suggest he’s put it all together.

As Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reported, Blewett will join the Orioles soon, and the team will need to clear space on the 26-man roster when he does.

Baltimore appears to be betting on recent results rather than past reputation—Blewett hasn’t pitched in the majors regularly since 2021, but his performance since returning stateside shows real promise.

Whether he becomes a fixture in the bullpen or a short-term option, the Orioles took a chance on an arm that many around the league weren’t watching too closely.
