New York Yankees DFA Former Top Prospect

The New York Yankees designated right-hander Yoendrys Gómez for assignment, ending a long and winding chapter for the once-promising prospect.

Gómez, who was added to the Yankees' 40-man roster in 2020 to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft, made just one MLB appearance — a scoreless two-inning relief outing in September 2023.

Despite flashing potential with a fastball that touched the upper 90s, he struggled with consistency and command in the upper minors. Injuries and a lack of development eventually pushed him down the depth chart, making him expendable as the Yankees reshuffled their roster.

The Yankees promoted veteran lefty Tyler Matzek to the active roster as a result, adding a high-upside, swing-and-miss option to their bullpen.

The 34-year-old was a key piece of Atlanta’s bullpen from 2020–2022 with a 2.92 ERA and 27.4% strikeout rate before undergoing Tommy John surgery, missing all of 2023, and signing with New York on a minor league deal after a brief stint with the San Francisco Giants.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees had to part with Gómez, a decision that shows how far his stock has fallen since being ranked among the organization's top pitching prospects just a few years ago.

Once considered a potential piece of the Yankees’ future rotation, Gómez has battled arm issues and inconsistent performances in the minors.

In 2024, he posted a 7.16 ERA over 27.2 innings at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, walking more than a batter per inning.
