New York Mets Sign 2 Players, Including Former Top Prospect

The New York Mets made a pair of under-the-radar but intriguing signings this week, inking first baseman Jon Singleton and infielder Niko Goodrum to minor league deals.

Singleton, who spent parts of last year with the Houston Astros, brings a disciplined eye at the plate and a strong glove at first base.

Former top prospect Goodrum, a switch-hitter known for his ability to play multiple infield and outfield positions, last saw big league action with the Boston Red Sox.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised the front office's approach, saying, “We’re always looking to build competition. These guys have been around the game, and they still have something to prove.”

Both Singleton and Goodrum are former top prospects who’ve had to grind their way back into the conversation.

Singleton, now 33, hit .208 with seven home runs in 70 games last season, while Goodrum spent 2024 in Triple-A, where he slashed .289/.390/.495 with 12 homers and 18 stolen bases in 86 games.

With injuries always a factor over a 162-game season, players like Singleton and Goodrum could play meaningful roles if called upon.

As one team executive put it, “They’re hungry. That’s the kind of edge we want.”
