MLB Trade Rumors: Top 3 Landing Spots Named for Sandy Alcantara
Will they or won't they? The Miami Marlins insist now that they aren't looking to trade former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara. But teams around baseball aren't buying it. In fact, they are trying to buy in on the right-hander, looking to work out a deal with the Fish.
Alcantara is not off to a great start this season, coming back from Tommy John surgery and sitting out the entire 2024 campaign. He has a 7.27 ERA through his first four starts, with an equally ugly 13:10 K/BB ratio in 17 innings.
Despite this, teams will try to buy low, knowing that he has that Cy pedigree.
David Schoenfeld of ESPN has listed the 3 most likely landing spots for the struggling ace.
Chicago Cubs
Rotation ace Justin Steele has gone down for the season after having his second elbow surgery since turning pro, last time a true Tommy John, this one called a “revision repair" of the UCL. They will need to find another ace starter, and Alcantara will be on their radar.
New York Yankees
Another team with injury troubles in the rotation, staff ace Gerrit Cole is out for the year, while reigning Rookie of the Year Luis Gil won't be back until after the midseason mark.
Boston Red Sox
It's not necessarily injuries that are the Red Sox's problem, but a lack of rotation depth. New ace Garrett Crochet has been brilliant, but after that.... Tanner Houck has been getting destroyed this season to the tune of a 7.66 ERA, Lucas Giolito hasn't pitched in the majors since 2023, and Walker Buehler is doing well, but still rounding into form in his first full season after his extensive 2022 Tommy John surgery.
We'll see which team blinks first and tries to nab Alcantara from Miami before the price gets too steep.
