MLB Trade Rumors: Insider Reveals Big Development In Sandy Alcantara Sweepstakes
One of the biggest trade targets noted by all baseball pundits coming into the 2025 season has been Miami Marlins' returning ace Sandy Alcantara. Coming back from Tommy John surgery, he looks close to the Cy Young Winner he was in 2022. All anyone figured, however, is that he was driving the price up for pursuing teams on the trade market.
Not so fast, however.
There's a big development in the Sandy Alcantara Sweepstakes, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman in the New York Post.
This Marlins regime consistently tells interested teams that legit ace Sandy Alcantara is not available. But considering the rest of their roster, rival execs remain hopeful that their minds change.
The Marlins, despite a 4-3 start to the season, have a woefully inept offense, and will not be a team in the playoff hunt this season. Trading Alcantara would bring back a huge haul.
In his 2022 Cy Young season, he led the major leagues with an 8.0 WAR, while posting a 2.28 ERA with a 0.98 WHIP and a 207:50 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He followed that up with a far less impressive 2023, with a 4.14 ERA, and then came the elbow troubles that knocked him out for the entire 2024 season.
The New York Mets, for one, are a team that has already come out publicly with their pleas for management to trade for Alcantara. In particular, Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor have stated those wishes.

Perhaps this hard stance by the Fish is a negotiating ploy to drive up the price, but it's something to keep an eye on as the season progresses.
