MLB Trade Rumors: 4 Teams Evolve As Best Fits for Nolan Arenado Trade

While the St. Louis Cardinals tried to trade Nolan Arenado over the winter, it didn't work out. Partly because he vetoed a deal to Houston at one point, and partly because free agent Alex Bregman fell into the Boston Red Sox's laps. But now four more teams have evolved as the best fits for Arenado, per ESPN's David Schoenfield.

The rebuilding Cards and the 10-time Gold Glove third baseman have been stuck with one another through the first few weeks of the 2025 season. And while he's obviously an elite defender, Arenado had seen his offensive production dip over the past couple of years.

But lo and behold, the 33-year-old is off to a strong start, batting .282 with an .833 OPS through 21 games, with a couple of homers and 10 RBIs.

And as the season unfolds, it's looking like these four clubs should be his strongest suitors:

Philadelphia Phillies

Last year's All-Star, Alec Bohm, is off to a very slow start, batting just .198 with zero homers and a .487 OPS. Starting to fall behind the red-hot NY Mets for the lead in the NL East, the Phillies must move quickly to plug holes like this one.

Chicago Cubs

Rookie Matt Shaw was thought to be the answer for their long-standing troubles at third base on the North Side of Chicago, but after 18 games of batting just .172 with a .535 OPS, Shaw was demoted to the minors recently, and journeyman/utilityman Jon Berti is now listed as their starting third sacker. The Cubs are trying to hold off the Milwaukee Brewers for top spot in the NL Central, and they'll need to figure out third base.

Toronto Blue Jays

Not surprisingly, the Jays are still struggling to get any production out of third base since letting Matt Chapman go after the 2023 season. They are currently 25th in OPS from their third baseman this season, with zero homers.

New York Yankees

Another AL East team with a lack of production out of 3B, the Yanks are currently going with Oswaldo Cabrera at third.
