MLB Rumors: Padres Got Exactly ZERO Offers for All-Star Trade Candidate
While closers are making the rounds in trade rumors these days around the majors, there are a number of names that usually get mentioned. But it's been revealed that the San Diego Padres got exactly ZERO offers this past winter when they had their closer, 2024 All-Star Robert Suarez, on the market.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today has reported this surprising development:
The Padres told every team in baseball that closer Robert Suarez is available with their money crunch, wanting to shed his $10 million salary.
Well, they did not get one single trade offer.
Not one.
So the Padres decided to ride it out this season with Suarez as their closer, despite looking to move on from him in the offseason.
Suarez was the best trade the Padres never made this winter
And as Nightengale notes, that move has turned out to be "the best trade never made this winter."
All Suarez has done this season is post a major league-leading 10 saves in 10 opportunities, with a 0.75 ERA and a 0.58 WHIP, while striking out 14 batters in 12 innings.
Last season, Suarez, 34, didn't do so badly either, with 36 saves in 42 opps, with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.
But San Diego was likely looking to move on from his contract. He's in the middle of a 5-year, $46 million contract, but he can opt out after the 2025 season, if he feels he can get better than the two years, $16M remaining on his deal, out on the open market.
This past winter, closers of his ilk were getting anywhere from $10M-$12M per year.
