MLB Rumors: NY Mets ‘Open’ To Extension With Pete Alonso

The futures of big-time slugger Pete Alonso and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. were inextricably linked this past offseason. Both teams were in contract showdowns with their long-time first basemen, and at one point the Jays thought they were on the verge of signing free agent Alonso as they seemingly gave up hope of signing Guerrero.

In addition, the Mets were thought to be the main suitor for Vlad if he made it to free agency after the 2025 season.

Now that Guerrero has signed his insane extension with Toronto, can Alonso be far behind with the Mets?

Owner Steve Cohen, after putting the squeeze on controversial agent Scott Boras and the Polar Bear for just a two-year, $70 million deal, admitted that he's "open" to working out a long-term extension with Petey.

"We're open. We're excited about the '25 Season. Listen, I hope Pete has a tremendous season. That would be great for the Mets, certainly great for him, and hopefully, that means that we can figure out a way to extend the arrangement," said Cohen, though he was quick to add, "We'll worry about when we worry about it, down the road."

Now that that road has been pockmarked by this deeply concerning Guerrero extension, it could take some unexpected twists and turns.

Whatever effect the insane Guerrero signing has on any further Alonso negotiations—and there'll surely be some—one thing that does seem clear is that Cohen & the Mets will not be taken advantage of like the Jays were by Guerrero. There'll be no massive overpay, no $500 million dollar deals (or even $200 million) for Alonso, as Cohen made crystal clear this past winter.

Unlike Vladdy, Alonso is off to a great start to the season, with three homers and 11 RBIs in just nine games, while batting .290 with a 1.066 OPS. By contrast, Guerrero is at .256 with 0 HR, 4 RBIs and a .667 OPS through 10 games.

The Mets, by the way, are 6-3 after sweeping the Blue Jays in a three-game set over the weekend. Toronto is 5-5.
