MLB Rumors: 3 Red Sox Players Listed As Trade Candidates

With the 2025 MLB season nearly a month underway, ESPN’s David Schoenfield has identified the Boston Red Sox as one of the more intriguing teams to watch.

In his early preview, he listed three potential trade chips from Boston’s farm system: Marcelo Mayer, Franklin Arias, and Yoelin Cespedes.

While the Red Sox have made strides with the emergence of rookie Kristian Campbell and a promising major league lineup, their rotation still lacks depth — making a trade for a top-tier arm like Miami's Sandy Alcantara a possibility.

Schoenfield suggested that the Red Sox, armed with a wealth of infield talent, could make a significant move.

“Roman Anthony is a nonstarter, but maybe Marcelo Mayer?” he wrote, pointing out that Trevor Story is still under contract for two more years, which could make Mayer more expendable in the short term.

Mayer, ranked among MLB’s top prospects, has four home runs and 22 RBIs in 17 games at Triple-A Worcester. Arias and Cespedes, meanwhile, are younger but highly regarded and could appeal to a rebuilding Marlins team looking for upside.

While trading Mayer would be a major decision, Schoenfield’s inclusion of his name shows the type of blockbuster move the Red Sox might consider.

Whether Boston parts with Mayer or opts for Arias or Cespedes instead, the front office is certainly in a position to make a major move if the right opportunity presents itself.
