MLB News: NY Mets Sign Lefty Coming Off Tommy John Surgery

He registered a solid 2.48 ERA with the New York Mets over a season and a bit, but had to sit out almost all of the 2024 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Now a free agent, 36-year-old left-hander Brooks Raley has agreed to a new one-year contract with the Mets.

The deal has a team option for 2026.

Coming off a terrific 2023 season in the Mets bullpen, Raley was able to get into just eight games in 2024—throwing seven innings in which he allowed just two hits and no runs—before elbow problems ended his season in May.

He's obviously made great progress, as less than 12 months later, last week, he threw a bullpen session for more than a dozen interested MLB teams, and the Mets were duly impressed.

Insider Joel Sherman indicates that Raley's doctors feel he'll be ready for rehab games in June.

The 6'3" southpaw began his MLB career in 2012 as a 24-year-old, but after two very unimpressive cups of coffee in the bigs with the Chicago Cubs, he left the majors to sign with the Lotte Giants of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), where he pitched for five seasons. In 151 total starts with the Giants, he posted a 4.13 ERA.

But then came a return to the major leagues in 2020, now pitching out of the bullpen, where he's had much more success.

Raley posted a 2.68 ERA with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2022, with a 0.96 WHIP in 53.2 innings. He struck out more than 10 batters per nine innings.

He put up an equally strong season for the Mets in 2023, with a 2.80 ERA in 54.2 innings. again with a 10 K/9.

The Mets are hoping he'll be a nice addition to their bullpen in the second half of the 2025 season.
