It's a total of a $116 million contract for the two-time All-Star, with $64 million being new money: He was already locked up through 2028 but this takes him through 2031 and includes a player option for that final year for $11.5 million.
With escalators, the deal could be worth $149.5 million. Marte also gets a 5 team no-trade clause (let's assume there are five places in baseball he really doesn't want to go to).
The contract also includes $46M in deferred money.
This is Marte's ninth season in Arizona, and last year was his second time being selected to the All-Star game. He batted .292 with a .932 OPS, along with a career-high 36 home runs and 95 RBIs. He had a career-best 155 OPS+. He won a Silver Slugger, and finished 3rd in MVP balloting.
As Sr. Vice President and Assistant GM Amiel Sawdaye said, "He's the type of guy you want to see in a D-Backs uniform for the rest of his career...
"Anytime we have the ability to keep a superstar here, it's definitely something we want to consider."
Marte, 31, first broke through as a star in 2019, when he earned his first All-Star berth, with a .981 OPS and 32 homers. Injuries took their toll for the next few seasons, before he bounced back with a very nice 2023, and another bust-out year in 2024.
He now joins other players receiving long-term extensions on this Wednesday, including a budding young phenom in Boston, and San Deigo Padres outfielder Jackson Merrill.
