Minnesota Twins DFA Pitcher Despite Posting 1.80 ERA With Team

The Minnesota Twins have designated right-hander Scott Blewett for assignment, making room on the roster for lefty Kody Funderburk.

Blewett had just been selected from Triple-A earlier this week and impressed in limited action, allowing one earned run over 4.2 innings while striking out five and issuing no walks.

Despite a strong 1.80 ERA over 25 big league innings for Minnesota over the last two seasons, Blewett’s role has remained unstable. He was twice outrighted in 2024, cleared waivers both times, and re-signed on minor league deals.

This marks the third time the Twins have DFA’d him in a little over a year.

The move came after a taxing night for the Twins' bullpen in Friday’s 7-6 loss to the Tigers, where multiple relievers were forced into extended action.

Blewett threw 36 pitches over 2.1 innings in relief, becoming the latest arm sacrificed to keep the bullpen fresh. “It’s about needing a fresh arm,” manager Rocco Baldelli explained postgame, pointing to the high pitch counts from multiple relievers, including Justin Topa and Jorge Alcala, the latter of whom gave up four earned runs without recording an out.

The DFA was less about performance than timing, as Blewett was simply the most expendable option with no minor league options remaining.

Now 29, Blewett has quietly delivered quality results in a limited sample, posting a 2.18 ERA and 204 ERA+ across just 33 career MLB innings.

Still, roster churn and bullpen fatigue left him on the outside once again. If he clears waivers, it’s possible he returns to Triple-A St. Paul on another minor league deal, but there’s also a chance a team in need of swingman depth takes a chance.

For now, his stint in the majors ends almost as quickly as it began—just days after a promising return, and just one day after his birthday.
