Miami Marlins DFA Infielder Despite Strong 2024 Season

The Miami Marlins designated infielder Jonah Bride for assignment on Tuesday to make room for outfielder Jesús Sánchez, who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list.

The move comes as a surprise to some, given Bride’s productive showing in 2024. Acquired from the Athletics prior to last season, he hit .276 with 11 home runs and 39 RBI over 71 games for Miami, showing solid plate discipline with an 11% walk rate and a manageable 20.2% strikeout rate.

He also provided defensive versatility, covering all three non-shortstop infield positions.

Despite his success last year, Bride struggled out of the gate in 2025. Through 12 games, he managed just four hits in 40 at-bats, slashing .100/.200/.100 with no extra-base hits and 15 strikeouts.

With Jesús Sánchez back in the lineup and players like Matt Mervis, Otto López, and Graham Pauley taking up infield spots, the Marlins opted to move on from Bride rather than option other players with remaining flexibility.

As a result, Bride was removed from the 40-man roster and placed on waivers.

Bride, 29, now enters DFA limbo, where Miami will have a few days to explore a trade before he’s either claimed or outrighted to the minors. While his early-season slump hurt his case, his 2024 performance and strong minor league track record — including a .289/.421/.489 line from 2021 to 2024 — could attract interest from teams looking for infield depth.

If he goes unclaimed, the Marlins could retain him as non-roster depth in Triple-A.
