Insider Provides Bold Update On Nolan Arenado Trade
The St. Louis Cardinals have been looking to trade Nolan Arenado for over six months, and the 10-time Gold Glover has been looking to move on to a contender.
Jon Heyman, in his MLB Insider Scoop on Bleacher Report, however, has made a bold statement that Arenado appears to be "out of luck" when it comes to a trade for now.
Arenado to the Dodgers? I think that one's unlikely. I think Arenado would love to go there... but, I don't see a weakness (at third base in LA), they like Max Muncy. And I'd say Arenado is out of luck as far as that's concerned. Right now, I'd say Arenado is stuck in St. Louis. No other way to put it.
He also shot down another potential destination for Arenado in the Chicago Cubs. They just gave up on their rookie hot-shot rookie that started the season, Matt Shaw, sending him down to the minors after he struggled to the tune of a .172 average and a .535 OPS through his first 18 major league games.
So there's a need there, right? Sure, says Heyman, but a Cubs-Cardinals trade?
"The teams do not love each other, and that's being kind. I don't see the Cubs making a trade with the Cardinals like that. Not seeing that."
Arenado, 34, saw his numbers take a significant dip last season, hitting just 16 home runs after being below 30 bombs just once in the previous eight full MLB seasons. His .710 OPS was his lowest since his rookie season 12 years earlier.
He is off to a nice start this year, batting .311 with a .908 OPS and two homers. Given that, Heyman doesn't rule out the possibility of a trade somewhere down the line, later in the season, when injuries strike a team in need.
