Done Deal: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Re-Signs With Blue Jays For 14 Years

It happened after midnight local time, when most Toronto Blue Jays fans were asleep, but they've woken up on Monday morning to the long-sought-after news that the face of the franchise, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., has signed his extension — a massive 14-year, $500 million, to keep him a Blue Jay for the rest of his career.

It's a $35.71 million average annual value, which is the 11th-highest ever in MLB.

As Jeff Passan writes, there are no deferrals in the deal, meaning that Vlad's contract is, in present value, the second-largest guarantee in major-league history. Juan Soto’s 15-year, $765 million deal signed with the New York Mets this past winter is tops, and, really, the contract that allowed Guerrero to ask for such an insane amount.

Vlad came into spring training with a self-imposed deadline of Feb. 18 to get an extension done, and said at the time that the Jays were not close to his desired amount. It was thought to be a $100 million gap, and in the last few days, Toronto capitulated, coming up to Guerrero's $500M threshold, and he's now a Blue Jay through 2039.

Now the team has to hope he's more the MVP-like 2021 and 2024 version of Guerrero, rather than the 2022/2023 version which was only 'pretty good' but not great.

This season, through 10 games, Vladdy is hitting .256 with no homers, 4 RBIs and a .667 OPS. In 2024, he batted .323 with a .940 OPS, 30 HR and 103 RBIs.
