Boston Red Sox Release Former All-Star Pitcher

The Boston Red Sox released veteran left-handed pitcher Matt Moore, ending his brief stint with the organization after he spent the early part of the 2025 season sidelined at Triple-A Worcester due to arm soreness.

Moore, 35, signed a minor league deal with Boston in February following an injury to left-hander Zach Penrod.

Despite a strong showing in spring training — four scoreless innings — Moore was informed he wouldn’t make the Opening Day roster and accepted an assignment to Triple-A rather than opting out.

Moore never got the chance to pitch for Worcester, and his release sends the former All-Star back to the open market. A 13-year MLB veteran, Moore has pitched for eight major league teams, including the Tampa Bay Rays, where he earned his lone All-Star appearance in 2013 after going 17-4 with a 3.29 ERA.

Most recently, he posted a 5.03 ERA in 51 games with the Los Angeles Angels in 2024 and had hoped to continue his career as a reliever with Boston.

“Nice depth move. Dude used to deal,” one fan posted when the Red Sox first signed him, though others were skeptical of the move given his recent inconsistency.

Moore transitioned to the bullpen in 2022 after a long run as a starter and briefly reestablished himself with a strong 2023 campaign, finishing with a 2.56 ERA across three teams.

Boston’s current bullpen includes lefties Aroldis Chapman, Brennan Bernardino, and Justin Wilson, all of whom are healthy.

Moore’s release appears to be a mix of bad timing and unfortunate injury. With no clear timetable for his recovery, he'll now look for another opportunity to prove he can still contribute at the major league level.
