Boston Red Sox DFA Former All-Star Pitcher

The Boston Red Sox have designated right-handed reliever Michael Fulmer for assignment, ending his brief stint with the team as they continue to make adjustments to their bullpen.

Fulmer, who was signed to a minor league deal during spring training while recovering from UCL surgery, never pitched in a major league game for Boston this season.

He had been working his way back at Triple-A Worcester, where he posted a 4.09 ERA over 11 innings, showing flashes of effectiveness but also signs that he’s still regaining full command.

Fulmer won the Rookie of the Year award in 2016 with the Detroit Tigers, posting a 3.06 ERA and 132 strikeouts across 159 innings and 26 starts.

This move comes as the Red Sox juggle their 40-man roster in response to ongoing injuries and a need for more consistent bullpen arms.

With Fulmer no longer in the picture, the team appears to be prioritizing relievers who are either fully healthy or offer more immediate upside. The 31-year-old Fulmer, a former AL Rookie of the Year with Detroit, has had an up-and-down career since transitioning from a starter to a reliever, but Boston was hopeful he could bounce back post-surgery and contribute in the second half.

Designating Fulmer for assignment gives the Red Sox seven days to trade him, release him, or outright him to the minors if he clears waivers.

While it’s possible another club takes a flier on him, especially given his past success, Fulmer’s journey back to the majors remains uncertain.
