Blue Jays Claim Veteran Right-Hander From Mariners For 3rd Stint With Team
The Toronto Blue Jays have reacquired—again—a veteran right-hander whom they once sent to the Seattle Mariners, and are now bringing him back from Seattle. The Jays have claimed 37-year-old veteran Casey Lawrence off waivers.

This move certainly won't change the trajectory of the Jays' season in any big way, but it's intriguing nonetheless that Lawrence heads back to Toronto for the third time in his career.
The swingman first appeared for the Blue Jays at the beginning of the 2017 season. But after just four appearances (2 starts, 2 in relief) and an 8.78 ERA, they sent him packing, and he spent the rest of the year in Seattle. He stayed with the M's for 2018, but after compiling an ugly 7.33 ERA he found no takers in the majors and headed to Japan for the 2019 campaign.
He arrived back in North America on a minor league deal with the Jays, where he spent 2021 in Triple-A, then made his return to Toronto in 2022 for 18 innings where he posted another woeful 7.50 ERA.
He spent some time with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2023, and had a—stop us if you've heard this before—ugly ERA of 6.59. He spent 2024 in the minors in the Seattle system, and had an ERA of... yup, 5.95, along with a 1-11 record.
Lawrence broke camp with the Mariners this season, pitched four innings, including two shutout innings against the Blue Jays, before he was DFA'd.
He holds a career 5-5 record, 6.51 ERA with 101 strikeouts in 134.0 combined innings across five different seasons in the majors.
