Baltimore Orioles Sign 6-Year Veteran Catcher

The Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran catcher Chadwick Tromp to a minor league contract, adding experienced depth to an already crowded but temporarily thinned catching group.

Tromp elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves, choosing to move on rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Gwinnett.

He’ll now report to Triple-A Norfolk, where he'll serve as a steady option behind the plate following recent injuries to top prospect Samuel Basallo and fellow catcher David Bañuelos.

Tromp, 30, brings six seasons of major league experience, having played in 61 games with the San Francisco Giants and Braves. He holds a .224/.235/.385 slash line across 162 plate appearances, along with solid defensive credentials.

While he’s unlikely to leapfrog Adley Rutschman or Gary Sánchez on the major league roster anytime soon, Tromp gives Baltimore a more seasoned fallback than Bañuelos and buys time for Basallo to recover and continue developing.

His presence ensures the Orioles won’t need to rush their prized catching prospects should an emergency arise.

With Sánchez struggling early in his tenure and Basallo currently on the IL with a hamstring issue, Tromp’s signing gives the Orioles an insurance policy.

He’s known more for his defense than his bat, but his years of Triple-A production and reputation as a reliable clubhouse presence made him one of the better veteran options still available.
