Report: Bryce Harper Offers To Change Positions To Bring In Big-Name Player

Bryce Harper has expressed a willingness to move back to the outfield if it means the Philadelphia Phillies can add a star first baseman to strengthen their lineup.

Speaking with The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Harper revealed that he had discussions with both his agent, Scott Boras, and the Phillies' front office about the possibility. "I’d be more than open to it if we had a guy like that, who was going to change our lineup or change the demeanor of our team," Harper said.

While he enjoys playing first base, his priority remains winning. "If it’s going to help us win, I’d go back out there."

The Phillies ultimately did not pursue Pete Alonso, who re-signed with the New York Mets on a two-year, $54 million deal. However, Harper’s flexibility could be a factor next offseason, especially with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. set to hit free agency.

With Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto, and Ranger Suárez among those coming off the books, the Phillies could have the financial room to add another big bat. Harper’s ability to play either first base or the outfield gives the team options as they continue shaping a roster built for a deep postseason run.

Since transitioning to first base in 2023 after Tommy John surgery, Harper has developed into one of the league’s best defenders at the position, ranking in the 93rd percentile with eight outs above average.

He also remains one of baseball’s top hitters, slashing .285/.373/.525 with 30 home runs last season. Though he hasn’t played the outfield since 2022, his extensive experience in right field makes a return feasible.

"I love playing first base. It’s been great. But if it’s going to help us win, I’d go back out there," he said. With the Phillies looking to stay among the National League’s elite, Harper’s willingness to adapt could be key in landing another impact player.
