Red Sox Rumors: Latest Report Casts Doubt On Rafael Devers' Future With Boston

The tension between Rafael Devers and the Boston Red Sox hasn't gone away—it’s just been pushed behind closed doors.

After the team signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal without consulting Devers, friction immediately followed. The 28-year-old, who previously made it clear that third base was his position, initially resisted any move to designated hitter and reportedly even considered requesting a trade.

While Devers later softened his public stance, telling reporters, “I’m good to do whatever they want me to do,” sources suggest he remains deeply frustrated. Manager Alex Cora all but confirmed the shift, saying Devers is "very unlikely" to play third base before the end of spring training.

That decision, paired with Devers staying behind while the team travels to Mexico for an exhibition series, has only fueled speculation about where things stand.

Devers’ long-term commitment to Boston is suddenly in question. His massive 13-year, $330 million contract means the Red Sox don’t have to trade him, but if his unhappiness lingers, that could change.

MassLive’s Sean McAdam reported that Devers has privately let the team know he still feels “aggrieved and disrespected,” making it clear that his acceptance of the DH role is more about necessity than contentment.

The Red Sox, fresh off an offseason that saw major upgrades to their rotation and lineup, are in win-now mode, and a disgruntled star could become a distraction. If Devers eventually forces the issue, teams would line up to acquire one of baseball’s best hitters.

For now, the Red Sox are moving forward with Bregman at third and Devers as their designated hitter, but this doesn’t feel like a resolved issue.

Devers is a franchise cornerstone, a three-time All-Star who has been the heart of the team since his MLB debut. Yet, the way Boston handled this situation may have fractured that relationship beyond repair.

Even if he starts the season in a Red Sox uniform, the question remains: how long will he stay?
