MLB Rumors: Yankees Linked To Three Players

The New York Yankees have been linked to three potential DFA candidates as they look to address injuries and depth concerns before Opening Day.

With limited spending flexibility and a thin farm system, Brian Cashman may look to the waiver wire for reinforcements, according to Jacob Mountz of Fansided

One name to watch is Vidal Bruján, a former top prospect who has struggled to produce at the major league level but offers defensive versatility and switch-hitting ability. Bruján, currently with the Chicago Cubs, is battling for a roster spot but could be the odd man out once Nico Hoerner returns.

Mountz notes that despite his underwhelming MLB numbers, Bruján "has showcased an ability to draw walks even while his bat slumped," which could make him a useful depth piece.

The Philadelphia Phillies also have a roster crunch that could lead to a utility infielder being placed on waivers, and Mountz points to Kody Clemens, Edmundo Sosa, or Buddy Kennedy as potential options.

While Sosa seems likely to stay in Philadelphia, Clemens and Kennedy could be available, with Clemens standing out for his strong spring performance, hitting .370 with two home runs in limited at-bats. Kennedy, meanwhile, has been a consistent hitter in Triple-A but has yet to establish himself in the majors.

If either is DFA’d, the Yankees could see them as low-cost infield depth. "If he can begin to replicate his minor-league success in the majors," Mountz writes of Kennedy, "he would be a great improvement over the Yankees’ internal options."

A final name to watch is Alexander Canario, an outfielder currently with the New York Mets who has struggled this spring and may not make the roster.

Canario has limited MLB experience but showed significant power potential in the minors, hitting 37 home runs in 2022 before injuries slowed his progress. With the Yankees in need of right-handed power, Canario could be an intriguing option.

Mountz points out that despite his slow start this spring, "if he can regain his form after his injuries, he might be a daunting power threat once more."

If placed on waivers, he could give the Yankees another bat to consider as they work around their early-season roster problems.
