MLB Rumors: Shocking Report Revealed About Free Agent Alex Verdugo
Despite being a key contributor to the New York Yankees' World Series run last season, the 28-year-old outfielder has not drawn serious interest. A league source told The Athletic that Verdugo hasn’t received a single major-league offer since becoming a free agent in November.
Even teams that showed early interest, like the Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Angels, and Houston Astros, never followed through with formal deals. Pittsburgh reportedly floated an $8 million figure before pivoting to Tommy Pham, while Houston opted for a cheaper alternative in Ben Gamel.

Verdugo’s struggles at the plate last season seem to be a major factor. After a strong start, he slumped badly over his final 91 games, finishing with a .233 batting average, 13 home runs, and a .647 OPS.
His postseason numbers weren’t much better, as he hit .208 in 14 games. However, his defensive play remained elite, ranking among the best left fielders in fielding percentage and defensive runs saved.
Still, over his eight-year career, the 28-year-old holds a solid .272/.328/.414 triple-slash line, along with 70 home runs, 316 RBIs, 22 stolen bases, and 409 runs scored across 800 games played.
Former Yankees teammates expressed their disbelief at his situation. “He’s such a great player,” Aaron Judge said. “He brings so much value and versatility to a team.” Manager Aaron Boone added, “Maybe a little bit surprised because he’s without question a big-league player and a big-league starting player, for me.”
This is weird.

Say what you want about Alex Verdugo, he’s a MLB caliber player. Great corner OF defense, doesn’t K much, normally racks up 30+ doubles. Hell of a lot better than whoever they got in Miami or on the White Sox.
Must be a piece of the story that’s missing… 🤔 https://t.co/A312g4ttNK
With most teams settled on their rosters, Verdugo’s options are limited. The Yankees moved on by acquiring Cody Bellinger and committing to Jasson Domínguez in left field.
Other teams in need of outfield help have either spent their remaining budget or chosen different players. At this point, Verdugo may have to wait for an injury to open a spot or accept a minor league deal to prove himself again.
"He’s grinding," shortstop Anthony Volpe said. "I think this is going to be a really good chapter in his story."
