MLB Rumors: Red Sox-Cardinals Linked To Potential Blockbuster Deal
With Kenley Jansen departing in free agency and internal options struggling, Boston's bullpen remains a concern despite an active offseason that saw the additions of Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Aroldis Chapman.
Helsley, one of the game's top relievers, is entering the final year of his contract with an $8.2 million salary, making him a prime trade candidate as the Cardinals look to shed payroll and reset their roster.
MassLive’s Chris Cotillo believes a deal for Helsley would make sense, writing, “The Red Sox can also attack the trade market for a highly paid reliever whose team might want to shed money by moving him.”

A trade package could center around right-hander Richard Fitts and outfielder Miguel Bleis, two of Boston’s top 15 prospects, along with cash considerations, Pressnell writes.
Helsley, 30, led MLB with 49 saves in 2024 while posting an ERA of 2.45 or lower in each of the last three seasons. St. Louis no longer has a pressing need for an elite closer amid its organizational reset, making Helsley expendable.
Pressnell describes Fitts as a developed pitcher who could compete for a rotation spot, while Bleis remains a high-upside prospect despite recent struggles.
The Cardinals are expected to field offers for Helsley throughout the season, with the Texas Rangers also seen as a potential suitor, according to Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller.
Ryan Helsley has been the only consistent aspect of this team this year. Dude is unreal.

Boston, however, can’t afford to overpay or bid against itself, especially with the Cardinals slow-playing the market.
If the Red Sox land Helsley, it would solve a glaring issue and significantly boost their 2025 playoff chances.
The trade deadline remains another option, but Helsley's 49 saves last season were more than the entire Red Sox team combined, making him the kind of impact arm Boston desperately needs.
