MLB Rumors: Insider Links Yankees To Veteran Starter

Buster Olney of ESPN reports that the New York Yankees are considering veteran right-hander Kyle Gibson as a potential addition to their rotation following Gerrit Cole’s season-ending Tommy John surgery.

With Luis Gil also sidelined for at least three months, the Yankees’ once-deep starting rotation is now a major concern. While they signed Max Fried earlier in the offseason, they may still need additional reinforcements, and Gibson’s durability makes him a viable short-term option.

"The Yankees will consider free agent possibilities such as veteran right-hander Kyle Gibson," Olney wrote, emphasizing the team's need for innings in Cole’s absence.

Gibson, 37, made 30 starts for the St. Louis Cardinals last season, pitching 169.2 innings with a 4.24 ERA, 4.42 FIP, and a 1.35 WHIP.

While he lacks overpowering stuff, he has consistently been able to take the mound every fifth day, a trait the Yankees could find valuable as they attempt to navigate Cole’s injury.

His pitch mix, including a sinker, cutter, and sweeper, allows him to keep hitters off balance, and his ability to eat innings could stabilize the back of the Yankees’ rotation. "If the Yankees feel they want some reliability at the back of their rotation, Gibson would be an adequate option," noted SB Nation’s Jeff Middleton.

New York is expected to weigh its options before making a move, with internal candidates like Will Warren potentially earning a shot.

However, the team may prefer an experienced arm to bridge the gap until Gil returns. The Yankees have also been linked to other free-agent pitchers such as Spencer Turnbull and Lance Lynn, but Olney suggests Gibson remains a strong candidate.
