MLB Rumors: Cubs & 13-Year Veteran Starter Talking Deal
With Javier Assad set to start the season on the injured list due to an oblique injury, the Cubs are looking for additional depth in their rotation. Manager Craig Counsell acknowledged Assad's progress but confirmed he will miss the start of the season.
If signed, Lynn could slot in as a fifth starter or swingman, potentially allowing Jordan Wicks and Ben Brown to begin the year at Triple-A Iowa to manage their workloads.
The Chicago Cubs, looking for starting rotation depth, have now entered negotiations with veteran Lance Lynn on a one-year, MLB contract.

Lynn, 37, returns to familiar territory, having spent two stints with the St. Louis Cardinals in addition to time with the Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, New York Rangers, Chicago White Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Last season, he started 23 games for the Cardinals, posting a 3.84 ERA with 109 strikeouts in 117.1 innings, a solid rebound after a tough 2023 campaign. However, his expected ERA (4.94) suggests he benefited from strong defense and favorable luck, raising questions about his long-term effectiveness.
Despite concerns about declining velocity, his durability and experience remain valuable for a Cubs rotation that lacks proven depth beyond Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele.
I've honestly rarely seen the Cubs fanbase more united than their "absolutely not" to Lance Lynn. https://t.co/t8KgELFhg9

The reaction from Cubs fans has been mixed, with many expressing skepticism about signing an aging pitcher whose performance has dipped in recent years.
One fan wrote, "I've honestly rarely seen the Cubs fanbase more united than their 'absolutely not' to Lance Lynn."
Others pointed to his history of allowing home runs, with one posting, "Will never forget Lynn on the HRs he allowed … lol."
While the Cubs also reportedly had interest in Kyle Gibson, their focus appears to be on Lynn. If signed, he would provide innings, but whether he improves the rotation is up for debate—especially when even Cardinals fans are laughing at the move.
