MLB News: Diamondbacks Lock Up Young Pitcher On Multi-Year Extension

The Arizona Diamondbacks have made a big move on the second day of the major league season, signing third-year starting pitcher Brandon Pfaadt to a five-year, $45M extension.

The extension runs through the 2030 season (beginning in 2026) and has a $21M club option for 2031 and a $25M mutual option for 2032. (mutual options, however, are pretty much a moot point, as the player will decline it if he's coming off a great year, and the team will likely decline it if the player has had a bad year).

The contract also includes a limited no-trade clause from 2030-32 of five teams.

Pfaadt, 26, completed his first full big league season in 2024, starting 32 games for the Snakes, going 11-10 with a 4.71 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP, and an impressive 185:42 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 181.2 innings, good for 5th in MLB in KK/BB ratio.

The 6'4" right-hander was named the D-backs' 2022 Minor League Pitcher of the Year and came into the 2023 season as a Top 5 prospect in the team's system. He made it up to the bigs that year, starting 18 games and posting a 5.72 ERA. He shaved a full run off that in his second season, and the Snakes are hoping he does the same in 2025.

He'll make his first start of the new season on Saturday for Arizona at home against the Chicago Cubs.
