MLB Free Agency: NY Yankees Sign Veteran Left-Hander

The New York Yankees pitching staff has been ravaged by injuries this spring, leaving the team badly in need of some depth. With that, they have gone out and signed left-hander and seven-year veteran hurler Ryan Yarbrough.

It isn't clear exactly what role Yarbrough will fill, but he's likely to be the second lefty out of the bullpen, and is back in familiar environs in the AL East.

The 33-year-old posted a 3.19 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP last season split between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays. He opted out of his 2025 minor league deal with the Jays on Friday, and quickly worked on landing a spot in Pinstripes.

“I’ve heard a lot (about the Yankees) from the pitching side and what they’ve been able to do with guys. That was exciting and intriguing to me and, obviously, being able to be a part of a team that has had a lot of success and expectations this year,” Yarbrough said. “I’m just trying to help out in any way I can.”

The list of injuries to the Yankees staff—both starting and relieving—has been off the charts:

Bullpen:

  • Ian Hamilton (infection)
  • Clayton Beeter (shoulder)
  • Jake Cousins (elbow)
  • Scott Effross (calf)
  • JT Brubaker (fractured ribs)
  • Tyler Matzek (oblique)
  • Jonathan Loáisiga (UCL surgery) could return sometime in May or June
Starting Staff:
  • Gerrit Cole (Tommy John surgery)
  • Luis Gil (lat)
  • Clarke Schmidt (back, shoulder)
Yarbrough was mostly a starter for the Tampa Bay Rays in his first five major league seasons, but has bounced between starting and relieving since then, and in 2024 was strictly working out of the 'pen.

He has a career 4.21 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP.
