Minnesota Twins Lose Newly Acquired Pitcher For "Extended Time"

The Minnesota Twins have lost veteran right-hander Erasmo Ramirez for an extended period after he suffered a significant tear in his shoulder.

Team trainer Nick Paparesta confirmed that Ramirez has tears in both his teres minor and lat muscles, and it will be several weeks before he is re-examined. "Right now, there's no definitive timetable," Paparesta told reporters.

The 34-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Twins in mid-February and was competing for a bullpen spot, but his spring training was cut short after just one appearance.

Ramirez, a 13-year MLB veteran, was reassigned to minor league camp before the severity of his injury became clear. The right-hander was expected to provide depth, potentially as a swingman or multi-inning reliever.

He spent last season with the Tampa Bay Rays, posting a 4.35 ERA in 20.2 innings, and has pitched for six teams over his career, including the Mariners, Red Sox, Mets, Tigers, and Nationals.

While he has been durable for most of his career, he missed significant time in 2018 due to shoulder issues, making this latest setback especially concerning.

With Ramirez sidelined indefinitely, the Twins will need to explore other bullpen options as they prepare for Opening Day on March 27.

If surgery is required, his absence could stretch even longer, though the team has not yet made that determination. Ramirez had been viewed as a potential depth piece for Triple-A St. Paul once fully healthy, but his road back to the mound now looks uncertain.
