Marlins & Yankees Linked To Blockbuster Trade For Cy-Young Winner

The New York Yankees and Miami Marlins have been heavily linked in recent days as speculation mounts around a potential blockbuster trade involving ace Sandy Alcantara.

In a bold prediction from Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer, the Yankees could swing a deal for the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner, sending a package of top prospects—right-hander Will Warren, outfielder Spencer Jones (Yankees’ No. 2 prospect, MLB No. 100), and shortstop George Lombard Jr. (Yankees’ No. 4 prospect)—to Miami.

“Given these things and how much their offense figures to miss Juan Soto, making a big trade for a proper ace may be the only way the Yankees can save their season,” Rymer wrote, citing injuries to Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt, and Luis Gil.

Alcantara has looked dominant in his return from Tommy John surgery, tossing 12.1 scoreless innings in spring training while showing the same velocity and command that made him one of the league’s most feared pitchers.

In his season debut on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Alcantara threw 4.2 innings, allowing two earned runs, walking four, and striking out seven. The Marlins went on to win 5-4.

With a team-friendly deal that includes a guaranteed salary through 2026 and a $21 million club option for 2027, he represents both short- and long-term value.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, “the Marlins, bless their payroll-slashing hearts, are virtually certain to move him,” even if it means backlash from the Players Association over how aggressively Miami continues to shed payroll.

For the Yankees, Alcantara would immediately anchor a depleted rotation that currently leans on Marcus Stroman and Carlos Carrasco.

The Marlins, meanwhile, would add MLB-ready arms and high-upside bats as they continue a full-scale rebuild following a 100-loss season. While some suggest swapping Warren for left-handed prospect Brock Selvidge might improve New York’s depth outlook, the framework proposed by Rymer may already be enough to land a front-line starter.

As Rosenthal put it, Alcantara is “a transaction waiting to happen,” and the Yankees appear ready to make their move.
