Marlins & Phillies Complete Pre-Opening Day Trade

Just ahead of Opening Day, the Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies struck a last-minute trade, with right-hander Tyler Phillips heading to Miami in exchange for cash considerations.

The move comes after the Phillies designated Phillips for assignment on Sunday, clearing the way for the Marlins to add some much-needed pitching depth following a string of injuries.

In a corresponding roster move, Miami designated reliever Seth Martinez for assignment.

Phillips, 27, made his MLB debut with Philadelphia in 2024, appearing in eight games—seven of them starts—and posting a 4-1 record with a 6.87 ERA.

Despite some struggles, his low walk rate (4.4%) and solid ground-ball profile (42.3%) showed promise. This spring, he struck out 14 of the 50 batters he faced (28%) and induced grounders at a 63% clip, but inconsistency plagued him as he allowed nine runs in just over ten innings.

“He gives us length and experience,” said a Marlins official. “We’re down a few arms, and he’s someone who’s stretched out and ready to go.”

The Marlins’ rotation has been hit hard this spring, losing Braxton Garrett to UCL surgery and Ryan Weathers to a forearm strain, while Edward Cabrera continues battling blisters and top prospect Eury Pérez remains sidelined following Tommy John surgery.

With Sandy Alcantara, Cal Quantrill, and Max Meyer penciled in, Phillips offers a potential swingman or spot starter option.
