Houston Astros Sign 6-Year Veteran Pitcher

The Houston Astros have signed left-handed reliever Jalen Beeks to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, according to The New York Post and The Athletic

The 31-year-old spent last season between the Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates, compiling a 4.50 ERA and 1.49 WHIP over 71 innings

Beeks, a six-year MLB veteran, is expected to compete for a bullpen spot as the Astros look to solidify their relief corps following the departures of Ryan Pressly, Hector Neris, and Kendall Graveman this offseason.

Beeks began his career with the Boston Red Sox, making his MLB debut in 2018 before being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays for Nathan Eovaldi, who played a key role in Boston’s World Series victory that year.

Beeks found success in Tampa, where he posted a 4.18 ERA over five seasons, including a standout 2.80 ERA in 2022. After a brief stint with the Rockies, he was traded to Pittsburgh at the 2024 deadline for Luis Peralta, who later posted an impressive 0.73 ERA for Colorado

While Beeks performed well for the Pirates with a 3.92 ERA and 3.12 FIP, Pittsburgh opted not to retain him after adding left-handers Caleb Ferguson and Tim Mayza this offseason.

With a fastball averaging 94.5 mph, along with a changeup and cutter, Beeks gives Houston another left-handed option for its bullpen.

His ability to work in multiple roles, including short relief and occasional opener duties, could make him a valuable depth piece.
