Blake Snell Shares Surprising Detail From Giants In Free Agency – 'I Was Shocked'

Blake Snell made a surprising revelation about his free agency, stating that the San Francisco Giants never reached out to him before he signed a five-year, $182 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Speaking with The San Francisco Chronicle, Snell expressed his shock that the team didn’t make any effort to bring him back, despite his strong second half of the 2024 season.

“The Giants didn’t even talk to me. It was surprising—I thought they really liked me,” Snell said. “I know Bob [Melvin] loves me, and I’m really close with Logan [Webb] and Chappy [Matt Chapman]. So I was shocked. I thought they’d come after me right away.”

Snell, who signed a two-year, $62 million deal with the Giants in March 2024, had the option to return but chose free agency after finishing with a 3.12 ERA, 145 strikeouts, and a no-hitter on Aug. 2.

Despite his performance and personal ties within the organization, he never heard from the Giants' front office—or even from Melvin, his former manager in both San Diego and San Francisco.

“I texted Bob and he didn’t reply, and Bob always replies to me, so I kind of had a feeling,” Snell said. “But it was weird, especially with all the other teams that were interested in me.”

The silence left him puzzled, especially given the Giants’ emphasis on pitching this offseason, which saw them pursue and ultimately miss out on Corbin Burnes.

Now with the Dodgers, Snell has moved on from any disappointment.

He and Melvin have since reconnected, and he understands that managers sometimes have to stay quiet during free agency. Still, the Giants' lack of interest helped push him toward Los Angeles, a move he welcomed.

“It was really easy, just because me and [partner] Haeley wanted to live here,” he said. “And when you look at the team, you look at what they’ve built, what they’re doing, it’s just something you want to be a part of.”
