Trey Mancini Making Another MLB Comeback

After sitting out a full year out from the major leagues for the second time in five years, Trey Mancini is on the comeback trail once again, signing a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The 32-year-old first baseman/outfielder last played with the Chicago Cubs in 2023, but he struggled to a .234 average with just four home runs and 28 RBIs in 79 games.

Mancini had previously had four 20-homer seasons, including a tremendous comeback in 2021 after fighting off cancer, when he returned to the Baltimore Orioles with 21 dingers.

The next season, however, he was traded from the O's, and hasn't been the same since. He batted just .176 in 51 games with the Houston Astros in '22 (though he has a World Series ring to show for it), before his tough time with the Cubs in '23.

His career year was in 2019, when he blasted 35 homers, but a diagnosis with Stage 3 colon cancer kept him out of baseball for all of 2020.

Overall, in a seven-year career, Mancini is a .263 hitter with 129 home runs and a .775 OPS (110 OPS+) in 831 games.
