Top 5 Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Free Agent Landing Spots (With Odds)
All the buzz around Toronto Blue Jays camp, naturally, is the status of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The face of the franchise is now heading into the final year of his contract, and will be a free agent next winter, after his self-imposed deadline on an extension came and went earlier this week.
The big question, in addition to how much he'll be seeking in free agency (some say as much as $500 million), is where he'll wind up.
Insider Jon Heyman has posted odds for the Top 5 potential landing spots for Vladdy, in the New York Post. It looks like this:
1. Boston Red Sox: 4-1 odds
As we've already noted, the BoSox are the leading frontrunner to sign Guerrero, based on a report that Vladdy has "told friends" that "he'd love to play for the Boston Red Sox."
Boston does have a young slugger at first base in Triston Casas, though his name has been prominent in trade rumors this offseason after a disappointing 2024. Then there's the other corner infield issue they currently have, with longtime third baseman Rafael Devers insisting that he will not move off 3B, despite the Red Sox signing Gold Glove third-sacker Alex Bregman.
Interesting times ahead for the Boston infield.
2. New York Mets: 5-1 odds
First baseman Pete Alonso was finally re-signed in free agency, but he will quite likely opt out of his deal after the year, assuming he has a big season. That would leave first base open once again in Queens, and we know that owner Steve Cohen is unlikely to flinch at Vlad's massive contract demands after handing out a $765M deal to Juan Soto this winter.
3. Toronto Blue Jays: 6-1 odds
This is probably wishful thinking for any Jays fan, as if they were going to re-sign him at his ridiculous demands, they would have already done it before allowing 29 other teams into the bidding.
4. Los Angeles Angels: 8-1 odds
Vlad Guerrero Sr. won an MVP in Anaheim, so there's likely some affinity to the Angels in the family. Plus we know that the Angels have handed out plenty of overpriced, insane contracts to sluggers in the past (Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols, Anthony Rendon).
5. New York Yankees: 10-1 odds
Last season, Vladdy retracted his past comments about never playing for the Yankees, "even if dead." He updated his stance by saying "Sometimes one says things. It is not that I am trying to take back what I said about the Yankees," Guerrero Jr. said. "This (baseball) is a business, and I've sat down to talk with my dad (Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero Sr.) and my family, because it's a business decision. I've told them that I didn't want to talk about it anymore."
But the Yankees already have handed out a $360M contract to their franchise players Aaron Judge. Would they spend $100M or more above that to land Guerrero?
