Top 3 Relievers Remaining on Free Agent Market
We've had a run on relievers on the free agent in recent days and weeks, with names like Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates, Jeff Hoffman, and Kenley Jansen coming off the board.
But for teams still looking to supplement the back end of their bullpens, there's good news as there are still some serviceable relievers out there for the taking.
Let's take a look at the top 3 remaining, plus some honorable mentions.
Kyle Finnegan
All Finnegan did was finish third in the majors in 2024 with 38 saves, but he doesn't seem to get any love. That could be because his 3.68 ERA was one of the higher ones amongst the top closers, and his 1.34 WHIP was by far the worst of any of the top dozen game-finishers. The 33-year-old did earn an All-Star bid, however, and he does have 77 saves over the past three seasons in Washington.
David Robertson
A veteran of the closing wars going back over a decade, Robertson is still going strong heading into his age 40 season. In a set-up role in Texas last year he merely tossed a career-high 72 innings, holding opposing batters to a minuscule .202 average and a .571 OPS, while recording a 3.00 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and 12.4 K/9. Certainly doesn't sound like the numbers of a 40-year-old.
With a career ERA of 2.91 and 11.8 K/9, teams could do a whole lot worse than Robertson for the back end of their bullpen.
Craig Kimbrel
It'll be interesting to see what team has the stomach to take a chance on Kimbrel. He started 2024 as the closer with the Baltimore Orioles, registering 23 by mid-July. But at that point, a series of blown leads and he was finally relegated to a less damaging role in the bullpen, pitching usually only in losses or blowout wins. He finished with a 5.33 ERA, his second time over the dreaded 5 mark in the last five seasons. He's a risk, especially at the age of 36, but there must be some team that might close their eyes, hold their nose and go for it.
Honorable Mentions:
- Héctor Neris
- Dylan Floro
