SIGNED: Pete Alonso Finally Makes His Free Agent Decision

It came down to this: Does Pete Alonso take a three-year deal for $71 million to leave the New York Mets, or does he accept a two-year deal for $54 million with an opt-out to stay in Queens with the only team he's ever known?

The Polar Bear has decided to stay home and sign back with the Mets.

Alonso gets a $10 million signing bonus and an opt-out after the first season, meaning, for all intents and purposes, it's a one-year, $30 million deal.

Alonso was drafted by the Mets in 2016 in the second round, was the Rookie of the Year in 2019, and is a 4x All-Star. He currently ranks third in franchise history with 226 home runs, which also ranks him second in all of baseball since 2019 in long balls, behind only Aaron Judge.

The signing ends a long offseason drama that threatened to break up the fan favorite Alonso from his dedicated following in New York.

Mike Ferrin on MLB Network said, "He has embraced being a star in New York... He is all-in for Mets fans.

“There aren’t a lot of players that have this kind of connection to a fan base.”

Alonso has been remarkably durable over his six years in the majors, missing only 24 games total over that span. Last season, in the full 162 games with the Mets, his numbers were at their lowest of his career, with 34 homers and a .788 OPS, but his playoff performance in 2024 had some memorable moments, and his absence from the New York lineup would have left a huge void. He still owns a career .854 OPS and a robust 134 OPS+.

For now, Alonso remains a Met. At least for 2025.
