Report: Twins Showing Interest In Two Free Agent Infielders
After missing out on Jon Berti, who signed with the Chicago Cubs, the Twins are looking for a reliable backup for Carlos Correa, who was limited to 86 games in 2024 due to plantar fasciitis.
Willi Castro filled in last season, but his defensive metrics at shortstop were below average, and the team prefers to use him in a utility role.
“Multiple league sources confirmed the Twins have expressed interest in adding a veteran shortstop,” Hayes reported. With Kyle Farmer signing with the Colorado Rockies, finding depth at the position has become a priority.

DeJong, 31, remains a strong defensive shortstop despite a decline in his numbers last season. He owns a career +32 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) at the position but finished 2024 with a -9 DRS mark.
Offensively, he continues to provide power, hitting 24 home runs while slashing .227/.276/.427 between the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals. Urías, 28, offers more versatility with experience at shortstop, second base, and third base.
He spent most of last season in Triple-A with the Mariners, where he hit .260/.378/.413, but struggled in limited MLB action, posting a .191/.303/.394 line in 109 plate appearances. While Urías’ best defensive positions are second and third base, he remains an option as the Twins look at their choices.

Minnesota has already added outfielder Harrison Bader and reliever Danny Coulombe this offseason, bringing their projected Opening Day payroll to $142.5 million.
Further moves may require trimming salary, with Christian Vázquez and Chris Paddack mentioned as possible trade candidates. DeJong and Urías are unlikely to command large contracts, making them realistic additions.
While the Twins are optimistic about Correa’s health heading into 2025, securing additional infield depth remains a priority after injuries contributed to their September collapse and playoff miss.
