Report: One Team's Manager Wants Alex Bregman "Badly"

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora is making a strong push for the team to sign free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman as spring training begins.

Cora, who coached Bregman during Houston’s 2017 World Series run, sees him as a big addition to Boston’s lineup, especially after the team missed out on Juan Soto.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported, “He has got backers. Red Sox manager Alex Cora wants Bregman badly.” The Red Sox have been relatively quiet in free agency, spending just $52.3 million this offseason, and Cora believes Bregman could be the impact bat they need to reinvigorate a frustrated fan base.

Signing Bregman would give Boston more lineup flexibility, allowing Rafael Devers to transition to a full-time designated hitter role and easing concerns about his defense.

The Red Sox, along with the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers, are among the teams in pursuit, but Boston appears to be the most aggressive. Bregman originally sought a long-term deal, but if he is open to a shorter, high-AAV contract with opt-outs—similar to Carlos Correa’s three-year, $105 million deal with Minnesota—the Red Sox could have an advantage.

However, reports indicate Boston is unwilling to go beyond four years, which could complicate negotiations if Bregman insists on a six-year deal.

The Astros have moved on, with GM Dana Brown stating that the team is exploring other options, leaving Boston in a strong position to land the two-time All-Star.

Cora’s backing could play a role in swaying the front office to finalize a deal. With pitchers and catchers reporting this week, the Red Sox have a chance to make a statement by bringing Bregman to Fenway Park.
