Report: Jose Quintana Shut Down Reunion Offer From This Team

José Quintana turned down an opportunity to reunite with the Pittsburgh Pirates despite the team’s strong interest in bringing him back.

The Pirates made a serious push to sign the veteran left-hander, offering him a contract with a larger guarantee than the one-year, $5.25 million deal they ultimately gave to Andrew Heaney.

Quintana, who posted a 3.50 ERA in 20 starts for Pittsburgh in 2022, opted to explore other options in free agency. “Before the Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to terms with left-hander Andrew Heaney, the team also actively pursued free-agent pitcher José Quintana,” reported Robert Murray of FanSided.

With Quintana declining their offer, the Pirates pivoted to Heaney to bolster their rotation.

Quintana remains one of the top available starters, coming off a strong 2024 season with the New York Mets where he logged a 3.75 ERA over 170.1 innings.

The Milwaukee Brewers have been mentioned as a potential landing spot, given his career 2.98 ERA against them, but they have yet to make a move.

Meanwhile, the Mets have shown only limited interest in a reunion, despite losing Frankie Montas to a lat strain. Pat Ragazzo of Mets on SI reported that “Quintana is very interested in a reunion with the Mets and would love to come back,” but the front office has not made a serious push.

The San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers have also been loosely connected to him, though financial limitations could complicate a deal.

Turning down the Pirates suggests Quintana believes he can find a better situation elsewhere. Pittsburgh saw him as a reliable option to stabilize their rotation, but he remains patient in free agency, waiting for the right fit.
