NY Mets Lose Infielder For Entire 2025 Season

Some brutal news for the New York Mets revealed by manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday, as he relayed that a CT scan found a fracture in the left shoulder of infielder Nick Madrigal, and he is likely done for the season.

Madrigal will have to undergo surgery. He injured the shoulder after falling awkwardly while making a throw in the infield at camp last week.

He was signed to a one-year deal by the Mets last month with the hopes that he would be their best option as a backup at shortstop to Francisco Lindor if he ever needed a day off, as the team doesn't really have another legit possibility there.

Madrigal was once a very good prospect in the Chicago White Sox system, but injuries have derailed his career, and now the 28-year-old will have to wait another year before trying to catch on with a team. He has a .274 lifetime average but just an 86 OPS+ (14% worse than the average hitter).

And just like that, Madrigal's days as a New York Met seem to have come to an end.

Amazingly for the Mets, their surprising breakthrough player last season, Jose Iglesias, who is a shortstop, remains on the free agent market after batting .337 for the Amazin's with an .830 OPS. The word is that the Mets don't want to sign him because the 34-year-old has no options to be sent to the minors.

They just might have to rethink that.
