New York Yankees Claim Two New Players & DFA One

The New York Yankees made several roster moves Wednesday, adjusting their 40-man roster ahead of Spring Training by claiming infielder Braden Shewmake from the Kansas City Royals and right-hander Owen White from the Cincinnati Reds while designating righty Allan Winans for assignment.

Both Shewmake and White were once considered top prospects in their respective systems but have struggled to establish themselves in the majors.

With pitchers and catchers set to report to Tampa on Feb. 12, the Yankees are taking a chance on their potential while adding some depth.

Shewmake, a 2019 first-round pick by the Atlanta Braves, has been on the move this offseason.

He was part of the Chicago White Sox-Royals trade involving Aaron Bummer and later landed in Kansas City before being claimed by New York.

The 26-year-old has struggled offensively in limited big-league action, batting just .125 with a homer and five stolen bases in 29 games last season.

White, a former second-round pick by the Texas Rangers in 2018, once ranked as high as No. 66 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 list but has struggled at Triple-A.

He posted an ugly 16.71 ERA in five relief appearances for the Rangers last year but possesses a deep pitch mix, which the Yankees believe they can refine.

Winans, 29, was claimed off waivers from Atlanta just two weeks ago, but with the Yankees continuing to adjust their roster, he is now the odd man out.

Though he has posted strong numbers in Triple-A, his 7.20 ERA across 40 major league innings raises concerns.

The Yankees have five days to trade him before he goes through waivers.
