MLB Trade Rumors: 3 Teams Linked To Rafael Devers

Rafael Devers' future with the Boston Red Sox is uncertain after the team's signing of Alex Bregman, which has seemingly pushed him into a designated hitter role.

Devers, who signed a $313 million extension with the expectation of staying at third base, has made it clear he has no interest in being a full-time DH.

With tensions rising, Christopher Kline of FanSided identified three potential teams that could make a move for Devers if Boston decides to trade him: the Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Chicago Cubs.

Detroit, which aggressively pursued Bregman in free agency, is still looking for a true superstar bat to anchor its lineup.

“What the Tigers lack, however, is a proper everyday superstar to anchor the middle of the lineup,” Kline wrote. Pairing Devers with young talents like Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson would give the Tigers a formidable offensive core as they push for contention.

The Phillies, previously linked to both Bregman and Nolan Arenado, could also be a strong fit.

“Stacking Devers behind Kyle Schwarber, Turner, and Harper in the lineup would go a long way toward cementing the Phils as bonafide, top-of-the-top contenders,” Kline noted.

While Alec Bohm has been a solid contributor, Devers would offer a major power upgrade at third base.

The Cubs, coming off the acquisitions of Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly, remain in win-now mode but still have a hole at third.

They were in the mix for Bregman before he signed with Boston, making Devers a logical alternative. “Trading for Devers would really cement the Cubs as serious NL contenders,” Kline wrote.

Adding him alongside Tucker would create one of the league’s most dangerous offensive duos while strengthening Chicago’s position in the NL Central.
